Overview of Certificate in Chinese Languages Courses

 Foundation Chinese Course consists of three multi-levels courses. This series of progressive courses, with a comprehensive coverage of oral, reading and writing skills, help you to build up your foundation, prepare for higher learning and finally master the language for professional purposes.

 For Whom

Certificate in Elementary Chinese (Levels 1 & 2 ) 

Foundation course. Learn to read and write Chinese.

It covers the fundamentals such as Hanyu pinyin, basic grammar, basic  power, character writing, strokes and stroke order.  

Anyone who can speak and understand simple Mandarin

 Certificate in Intermediate Chinese
(Levels 1 & 2)

 A refresher course for anyone who has completed secondary school Chinese (or equivalent) and would like to brush up his/her Chinese for higher learning.

 Anyone who has lower secondary* Chinese standard

 Certificate in Advanced Chinese

 Advanced course to master the Chinese language.

Minimum Chinese standard required for entry into China universities or job market.

 Anyone who has at least upper secondary* Chinese standard

*The 'lower' and 'upper secondary' Chinese standards mentioned relate to the general Chinese standard in the Singapore educational system.


 

 



Certificate in Elementary Chinese Levels 1 & 2,

Introduction
This is a foundation course for anyone would like to learn to read and write Chinese. Adopting standard Mandarin (Putonghua) as the benchmark and adapting it for local usage, it helps learners to build a firm foundation in the Chinese language. This course uses imported textbooks published by China universities for overseas Chinese learners.

Course Goals
This pragmatic course aims to help learners to build their foundation in the Chinese language so that they will be able to speak, read and write in Chinese. Learners will acquire sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself on most topics pertinent to his every life (e.g. interests, family, work).

  • Able to recognize and write 3000 Chinese vocabulary
  • Able to apply Chinese grammar to form sentences applicable to real life situations.
  • Able to apply recognize and produce the sounds of the Chinese language (e.g. finals, initials, tone patterns)
  • Build up sufficient vocabulary for you to read newspapers and write short passages. 

In each level, you will focus on a particular area:

Build up your foundation !

For Whom
Anyone who can speak and understand simple Mandarin

Course Objectives
Emphasis is on building foundation & building your vocabulary power so that you will be: 

  • Able to recognize & write 400-500 Chinese words
  •  Able to read short passages with the aid of Hanyu pinyin
  • Able to write short essays (120 words)

Level 2
Improve your reading ability !

For Whom
For anyone with *LOWER PRIMARY Chinese standard or equivalent

Course Objectives
Emphasis is on reading articles and perfecting your pronunciation so that you will be:

  • Able to recognize and write 500-600 Chinese words
  • Able to use 50 Chinese idioms
  • Able to read simple Chinese articles (with stress marks but no Hanyu pinyin)
  • Able to write an essay (250 words)

Course Content

  1. Introduction to Chinese Phonetics   (Hanyu pinyin)
  2. Basic Character Writing (400-500 words)
  3. How to Use Chinese     Dictionaries
  4. Basic conversational skills
  5. Short Passage Reading
  6. Short Essay Writing  (~120words)

Course Content

  1. Revision of Hanyu pinyin & character writing
  2. New Vocabulary (500-600)
  3. Introduction to idioms (50 idioms)
  4. 4 Perfect your pronunciation: Speak standard Mandarin
  5. Read simple newspaper/magazine articles
  6. 6. Write an essay (~250 words)

 Trainers Profile

 Professional Language Teachers who have many years' of experience in language teaching.

  • Native speakers from China and have lived in Singapore for a number of years.
  • With Master/Degree in Applied Linguistics, English or Chinese Languages, Education or other relevant subjects.
  • Effectively bilingual in English and Chinese. 
     
  • Course Structure

    1. INTENSIVE Weekdays Evening Class   OR
    2. LEISURE Weekend Day Class   
    Choose one of the classroom-based classes
    •  INTENSIVE Weekdays Evening Class
      Twice a week
      Either Mon & Wed OR Tue & Thu
      7:00pm to 10:00pm
      10 lessons
      Starts every two months
    •  LEISURE Weekend Day Class
      Once a week (Every Saturday or Sunday)
      2:00pm to 5:00pm
      10 lessons
      Starts every 3 months

    Medium of Instruction
    Taught in Mandarin.

    Certificate of Proficiency
    Awarded to participants who achieve 75% attendance and pass the class test.

    Certificate of Attendance
    Awarded to participants who achieve 75% attendance.

    • Course fee at $610/level + GST (non-member) & $560/level + GST (member). Each level comprises of 30hrs/10 lessons. 
    • Public holidays are taken into consideration when planning the classes. NO lessons will be held on official public holidays.  
    • COURSE INFORMATION SUBJECT TO CHANGE. PLEASE CHECK THIS SITE REGULARLY FOR REVISED DATES.
    • Upon confirmation of the class, a confirmation letter will be sent to you via email. The course dates will be confirmed in the letter.
    • Replacement of Certificate: S$20 (excludes GST)
