Intermediate Chinese for Business

Intermediate Chinese for Business (Level I-IV) is a refresher course for anyone who has some foundation in Chinese and would like to brush up his/her Chinese for higher learning and learn aspects of business Chinese.  

Module Content


Take a step up in Intermediate I by understanding the differences between written and spoken Chinese, complex sentence patterns and learning proverbs suitable for business settings.

Be able to interact in professional settings such as a business banquet where you will be able to conduct yourself well as a host or attendee.

Broaden your ability to communicate your intent with your business clients or partners.

Tackle new business skills in Intermediate II by building an understanding of how to express numbers including decimals, fractions and multiples in Chinese.

Build a repertoire of conversation topics to break the ice with your business counterparts in corporate & casual settings and pick up the skills to tackle your personal travel planning in Chinese-speaking locales.

Learners will be able to be express themselves professionally at business events where the predominant language is Chinese.


Learn how to handle yourself when expressing yourself when tackling advertising & promotion and marketing strategies in a Chinese speaking environment.

Be respectful and tactful when navigating in a Chinese speaking country and be aware of potential scenarios that may be unfamiliar to non-native speakers while respecting Chinese customs and hospitality.

You will also expand on your numerical knowledge at this level to tackle more complex sums. 

Tackle more social settings with potential clients or suppliers. Break the ice through casual conversation topics and impress them with your Chinese knowledge and humor.

Learners will learn more about the important of first impressions in the eyes of Chinese speakers and be able to interact on topics such as sports or the environment.

You will also be able to discuss serious business topics such as company welfare & the environment as well as dealing with resignations or layoffs.


This course adopts imported textbooks, published by reputable universities in China, specially designed for overseas Chinese learners; with additional Business Chinese components solely developed by SCCIOB. Lessons are conducted in a structured yet pragmatic manner as lectures are blended with pair work, group discussions, role-plays and presentations etc. 

Learning Outcomes

Intermediate Chinese for Business (Level I-IV)
•    Have a command of a wider range of vocabularies and complex Chinese sentence patterns
•    Communicate and exchange views about social and business topics
•    Have insight into Chinese business culture, etiquette, and manners
•    Differentiate the use of written vs. spoken Chinese and formal vs. casual Chinese in interactions with different groups of people

Target Participants:

Those who are looking to refresh their knowledge of the Chinese language and learn more on how to use it for higher learning or in professional business settings

Medium of Instruction:


Total Training Hours (per level): 36 hours (3 hours x 12 sessions)

Min. Chinese Proficiency of Applicant:

Placement Test - Participants are required to sit for a placement test which is used to evaluate their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Based on the test results, participants will be placed at a level that matches their proficiency.

The placement test can be taken on Wednesdays, 2.00pm to 4.15pm (online) & Saturdays, 9.00am to 12:00pm (in-person).


For Lv I: Completed Elementary Chinese for Business II
For Lv II: Completed Intermediate Chinese for Business I
For Lv III: Completed Intermediate Chinese for Business II
For Lv IV: Completed Intermediate Chinese for Business III

Assessment and Certification

For each level, there is an assessment during the second last session. The assessment includes a 1-hour test assessing the participants' reading and writing skills.

Participants who pass the assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Proficiency from SCCIOB
